  • Lunar New Year of the Ox on 26 Jan

This year, our celebrations will definitely be simpler and cheaper due to economic crisis. tsk tsk.. Chinese families across Asia are planning cheaper reunions feasts and gifts to mark the Year of the Ox as the global economic slump forces a toning-down of celebrations. My second brother, Chin How and his wife, Jasmine won't be able to come back to celebrate chinese new year with us, and little brother too, Jie. He flew to Sydney few years ago to get things prepare as the uni start commerce next week. My mother too. She went along with my brother. So this year, it will be only me, my sister, big brother, Hui and my dad. I guess my sister and I have a serious business to deal with now, which is we have to cook a 'really' good meal during the Chinese Nea year, else my dad will gonna smack us. Since my mother is far away from home, my sister and I have to take over her role to cook, prepare a really nice meal my father and brother. It's not an easy task. The amount that my mum prepare was like cook for whole village. lol...

  • i miss you, 'ah ma'

Just in case, some of you do not know what 'ah ma' means. It means 'granny' in hokkian (it's a dialect). I wrote a message with my 'limited chinese's writing skill' to my 'ah ma' who rest in peace few years ago. In the message, it's just about how important is her appearance in our family and how much we all miss her. Here goes the message:

    x

    Not-so-professional's translation
*'ho lei'- means delicious in 'Heng Hua'
'ye ko ko'- means the food is tough in 'Heng Hua'
'Heng Hua'- older version of hokkian (well...that's what I think about heng hua tho)
'heng hua' and 'hokkian' - a dialect

    Grandmom, I miss you!!!

Probably is because the heavy rain...well..i guess. I can't think of any better explanation for this stupid itchiness. They attacked my forehead too. Oh well.. hopefully they won't come and attack me again tonight. Btw, I'm going to perm my hair later. Weeeeee..

  • what we did today

Sister finished her last paper today!! YAY!! After that, we decided go to city and try to for shoes to wear during bro's wedding. We walk..walk...walk... and walk...ended up didn't get anything for ourselves but for my little cousin, Ariella. Sooooo cutee.. We got her a flowery dress, a red hat and a smart-look's top. After that, we're thinking..wth..we suppose to come out and get things for ourself, but we got distracted with all these cuttie small dress from Pumpkin Patch.

    Pinky Love top

    Cuttie pink hat for baby

    and...

    Lady-Look's dress

At the end, we got home at 5p.m.. Tired and only started to cook dinner at 7p.m. A steam fish and bok choy with oyster source. I bought a 0.7kg of Barramundi fish (enough for two persons) from Eastgarden yesterday and steamed it tonight for dinner. It was sooo good and bok choy too. Simple. After dinner, walnut cake from yesterday as the dessert.

This is our dinner. One fish, one vege. Super full for two person. My sister's keep-fit's plan is undergoing, so she refused to eat too much of rice. So, I have to sapu the rest of the rice by myself. Oh well... Hopefully I won't turn into chubby girl at the end of the year. Nooooo..

Season the lamb cutlets, prawns and salad with sea salt to bring out its flavour. Another thing was I just realize we don't have balsamic vinegar and olive oil left for the dressing. So, I ended with mix the apple cider vinegar + honey together. Guess what? Taste nice too.. *phiew

Present you the burn 'Walnut Cake'. haha..obviously the top part was burn due to i was busy in the room and didn't check it after I thew into oven.

buttt... it's taste nice and NO burn

I'm so full now after one big plate of lamb+prawn+ saladss and few pieces of cakeyy. Super full. I'm already thinking what to bake, cook for tomorrow. hmmmm//

  • Feel like baking?

Baking makes me feel good about myself

Loving myself is never my strength as I tend to spend most of my time loving the people around me. In short, I often neglect myself.

Having said that, recently I am starting to love myself more . I used to do things to please the people around me, to get their approval. Sometimes, there's a voice telling me that no matter how much effort I put in, I will never be able to please my love ones or my friends. My efforts are never good enough. So since that it the case, why not use that energy to please myself? Be selfish and have more 'me' time?

Lately, I try to look things in a more positive way. I took some time to reflect on the things that make me feel good about myself. ummhmm... I'll be free before my last final paper in about two week times. So, I decided to spend my holiday with cooking and of course... baking. I just love baking and cooking, especially for my love ones and friends. The kitchen is my heaven in the house. I can spend hours at supermarket just try to look for ingredients or just get inspiration for what to cook for tonight.

    Soooo.....

I decided to start cooking & baking's period. Teeheee

Last night, I baked "Smalll cheesecakes with macerated strawberries" and it took me about 2 hours to finish baking + cleaning up the mess.

    And...

Today, I made "Apple Galettes". This time, I managed to take photos of its ingredients and how it actually looks like before I throw into oven.

    DSCF1199
    the ingredients

    DSCF1201
Thinly slice the green and red apples

    DSCF1200
the pastry squares with the sieved egg yolk

    DSCF1203
pastry with almond mixture on top

    then....

    DSCF1208
alternate the red and green apple slices on each pastry square. After this, brush with the apricot jam and sprinkle with the cinnamon dusting sugar

    DSCF1205
Here how they look like after being bake for 15 minutes, or until puffed and golden

Very satisfy with the baking thing today. at least, get away from sitting in front of the laptop/lay on the bed/eating junk food/ day dreaming, etc etc

Enough for today. More to come...
